What Defines Success?
We all want to be successful, right? But what exactly does that mean? Success is a pretty big word, and it's not always easy to define.
The truth is, success is a very personal journey. I know it's cliche, but it's not about reaching a specific destination, but about the journey itself. It's about growing, learning, and becoming the best version of yourself. This version doesn't compare itself to anyone (enviously). This version helps others. This version serves others. This version wants to obtain more for the sake of giving back.
Above all that, God is the priority through it all. As you read, explore your own presuppositions behind success, failure, etc. What conclusions do you come to?
As a follower of Christ, how do we succeed?
Competently use the gifts God has given you the best of your ability.

Here is a worksheet to go along with your reading! Take what you learn and act on it.
The Meaning of Success
What does success even mean? We hear it everywhere, from motivational speakers to magazine covers, but what does it truly look like in our lives?
Success is a journey, not a destination. It's about growth, progress, and ultimately, finding joy and fulfillment. It's about aligning your actions with your values and beliefs, and making a positive impact on the world.
But success is also a very personal thing. What makes one person feel successful might be completely different for someone else. It’s about understanding yourself and what truly matters to you.
  • Perhaps success is reaching a specific goal, like getting a promotion or starting a business.
  • Learning industrial engineering to build houses, communities, etc.
  • Maybe it's about living a life of service and making a difference in your community.
  • Or maybe it's about finding peace and contentment in your daily life, no matter the external circumstances.
Success as a Personal Journey
Success isn't a one-size-fits-all concept. It's a unique voyage, a journey that unfolds differently for each of us. You might be striving for a specific career, a dream home, or maybe just a deeper sense of peace. That's the beauty of it - success is whatever you define it to be.
Imagine a winding path, like the ones you might see through a lush forest. Some parts are paved and smooth, while others are rocky and challenging. It's the same with our individual paths to success. Some milestones are easy to achieve, while others require persistent effort and grit.
Each step we take, each obstacle we overcome, adds to the richness of our journey. There's no finish line, no grand finale. Success is about embracing the process, learning from our missteps, and celebrating even the smallest victories along the way.
Think about it: what truly defines success is not the end result, but the journey itself. It's about the growth, the experiences, and the lessons we learn as we navigate our unique paths. So, take a deep breath, embrace the adventure, and let your definition of success guide you.
Achieving Goals and Aspirations
Setting SMART Goals
We've all had those grand dreams and aspirations that we long to achieve. But sometimes, those big dreams can feel overwhelming. That's where setting SMART goals comes in. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. By defining your goals in this way, you're giving yourself a clear roadmap and making them feel more attainable.
For example, instead of saying, "I want to be healthier," you might say, "I want to lose 10 pounds in the next 3 months by eating healthier meals and exercising three times a week." This specific, measurable, and time-bound goal gives you a clear target to work towards.
Celebrating Milestones
Success isn't always about reaching the finish line. It's also about celebrating those milestones along the way. Each step you take towards your goal, no matter how small, deserves recognition. This could be anything from finishing a chapter of a book you're writing to completing a challenging workout or even just sticking to your healthy eating plan for a whole week.
These small wins are powerful motivators. They keep you engaged and remind you of the progress you're making, which can be especially important when things get tough. So, don't forget to give yourself a pat on the back for those small victories along the journey!

Making a Positive Impact on Others
Leaving a positive mark on the world is a powerful aspect of success. It's about contributing to something bigger than yourself, making a difference in the lives of others, and leaving a legacy of kindness and generosity. This doesn't always mean grand gestures; it can be as simple as offering a helping hand, spreading joy, or inspiring others to pursue their dreams. Whether you're volunteering your time, supporting a cause you believe in, or simply being kind and compassionate, these actions have the power to ripple outwards and create a positive impact.
Think about people who have made a difference in your life. Perhaps it was a teacher who inspired you, a friend who offered support during a difficult time, or a stranger who showed kindness when you needed it most. These individuals, through their actions, have left a positive mark on your life. The same can be true for you. You have the potential to inspire, encourage, and uplift others, leaving a positive impact on their lives.
Finding Happiness and Fulfillment
Beyond achieving goals and making a positive impact, success is also about finding true happiness and fulfillment. This doesn't necessarily mean a constant state of euphoria, but rather a deep sense of satisfaction with your life's journey.
It's about finding joy in the simple things, embracing challenges as opportunities for growth, and feeling a sense of purpose in what you do. It's about recognizing and appreciating the blessings in your life, big or small. True fulfillment often comes from aligning your actions with your values and pursuing things that resonate with your soul.
  • The pursuit of happiness and fulfillment can be a lifelong journey, and it's essential to be kind to yourself along the way.
  • Don't be afraid to explore new experiences, connect with others, and discover what brings you joy.
  • Remember that happiness is not a destination, but rather a journey.
  • Celebrate the small wins and the progress you make along the way, as they all contribute to the bigger picture of your overall fulfillment.
Aligning Success with Your Values and Beliefs
Success isn't just about ticking off a list of achievements; it's about how those achievements fit into your core beliefs and what truly matters to you. Think of it like a compass: your values and beliefs guide you towards a destination that resonates with your inner self.
When your success aligns with your values, it creates a sense of authenticity and fulfillment. You're not just chasing a goal for the sake of it; you're pursuing something that aligns with who you are at your core. This kind of success feels different - it feels right. You're not simply achieving something; you're living out your purpose and making a difference in a way that feels meaningful to you.
  • For example, if you value family above all else, you might find success in building a strong and loving home environment, even if it means choosing a career path that isn't the most lucrative or glamorous.
  • Or, if you deeply believe in social justice, you might find success in volunteering your time to a cause you're passionate about, even if it means sacrificing some personal comfort.
  • The key is to identify what truly matters to you and then set goals that reflect those values.
Biblical Perspectives on Success
So, what does the Bible say about success? Well, it's not about hitting the top of the corporate ladder or amassing a ton of money. Nope. The Bible talks about a different kind of success, one that's centered around our relationship with God and serving others. It's a success that's rooted in faith, humility, and compassion, not worldly achievements.
Let's dive a little deeper into this. The Bible is full of stories about people who were considered successful by worldly standards but ultimately failed to find true fulfillment. For example, King Solomon was known for his wisdom and wealth, but he ultimately realized that these things couldn't truly satisfy him. He wrote, “All is vanity and a striving after wind.” (Ecclesiastes 1:14). Despite all that he's acquired, he stated that, ultimately, without God, there is no innate reason to do anything. No purpose. God gives us our purpose. That is our success that has been granted to us. With this gift, we are successful - it transcends any physical reward we could receive on earth.
The Bible also emphasizes the importance of serving others and putting their needs above our own. Jesus himself taught that true greatness is found in humility and service. He said, “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)
So, how can we find success in the biblical sense? It's about prioritizing our relationship with God, living a life of faith and obedience, and serving others with compassion. Why? Because none of anything that we earn, acquire, receive is possible without Him. It's about finding joy in the journey, not just the destination. It's about recognizing that true success is found in living a life that pleases God, not in achieving worldly status or possessions. It's a journey that involves a lot of trust in God and knowing that He's got our back every step of the way.
Align your will with God's will. This is how you find success. The world won't give it to you. Nothing comes close.
What Does Christ Say About Success?
Now, you might be thinking, "Wait, didn't Jesus say something about losing your life to gain it?" And you'd be right! He did. And that's a pretty radical idea when you think about it. It's all about shifting our focus from worldly success, which often comes with a lot of baggage, suffering, etc. to a deeper understanding of what truly matters. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus says, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” So, what does that mean for us in the context of success?
It means finding success in serving others, in loving unconditionally, and in living a life dedicated to making a positive impact on the world. It means aligning our values and goals with the principles of love, compassion, and humility. It's about prioritizing the needs of others over our own desires and finding fulfillment in the act of giving, not receiving.
Look at it realistically. If you are an entrepreneur and create a product or service designed to solve problems, you may want to charge an absurd price as you believe the product/service is immense in value. If you're smart, you will instead focus on developing genuine relationships with your target audience and/or clients. Connections = $$$, but it has to be developed first. You can have a killer product, but without testimonials or social proof, you're a dead idea. Sometimes, you have to lower yourself to the ground (humility) to see your audience for what they are. When you do that, then you can truly solve problems - this is when the money will flow naturally. Then, you fund it back into the company to grow the community, thus making more money. Jesus did it best, and he did it for free. That's why his salvation is a gift, we just have to accept it.

"If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it." (Matthew 16:25, NLT)
This verse emphasizes the paradox of finding true life and purpose by surrendering one's own desires and following Christ's path. With this, the Lord will bless you when you seek His kingdom.

So, while the world might measure success in terms of wealth, power, and fame, Jesus offers a different perspective. He encourages us to seek success in building strong relationships, making a difference in the lives of those around us, and ultimately, growing closer to God. That's the kind of success that truly lasts, and it's a success that's available to everyone that transcends time.
Succeeding Through Humility and Service
Humility and service are two key components of Christ's teachings on success. He constantly emphasized the importance of putting others before ourselves and recognizing our dependence on God. The Bible teaches that true success isn't measured by worldly achievements or material possessions, but by our willingness to serve others and live a life of humility. Jesus himself, the Son of God, humbled himself to become a human and lived a life of service to others. We can find inspiration in his example and strive to emulate his humility and selfless love.
  • When we focus on serving others, we are less likely to be consumed by our own ambitions and desires.
  • Humility allows us to see the needs of others and respond with compassion.
  • By serving others with love and generosity, we create a positive impact on the world around us and experience true joy and fulfillment. This type of success aligns with Christ's teachings and brings about lasting peace and happiness.
Overcoming Obstacles and Challenges
Life, as we all know, is rarely a smooth, straight path. It's filled with bumps, twists, and turns. These are the obstacles and challenges that test our resilience and shape us into the people we become. Just like a river encountering a rock, we can choose to be diverted or to carve a new path through the obstacle. But how do we do this? How do we overcome these trials and emerge stronger?

1

Recognize and Acknowledge
The first step is recognizing the challenge and acknowledging its presence. Denial won't help; it just delays the inevitable.

2

Develop a Strategy
Once acknowledged, it's time to strategize. We need a plan, a roadmap to guide us through the obstacle. This might involve seeking help, learning new skills, or simply adjusting our approach.

3

Embrace the Struggle
Overcoming a challenge rarely happens overnight. It takes time, effort, and persistence. Embrace the struggle, knowing that every step forward, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goal.

4

Learn and Grow
The ultimate victory comes not just from overcoming the challenge but also from the growth that comes from it. Challenges are opportunities to learn, develop new skills, and emerge stronger than before.
The Bible provides a powerful reminder that we are not alone in facing challenges. "For we are pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, yet not in despair; persecuted, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed" (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). These verses remind us that difficulties are part of the journey, but God's grace is sufficient. We can find strength and encouragement in knowing that we are not alone in our struggles.
Overcoming obstacles and challenges isn't about avoiding them. It's about embracing them, learning from them, and ultimately becoming a better version of ourselves. It's about turning the bumps in the road into stepping stones, and turning the twists and turns into paths to new growth and discovery.
Celebrating Small Victories
The Power of Small Wins
Don't underestimate the power of celebrating small victories. Each accomplishment, no matter how minor it may seem, is a stepping stone towards your larger goals. When you recognize and acknowledge your progress, you boost your motivation and confidence. It's like a little pat on the back that keeps you going, even when the road ahead seems long and challenging.
Boosting Your Spirit
Celebrating small wins isn't just about acknowledging your accomplishments; it's about boosting your spirit. Think of it as a mini-party for your soul! A quick moment of joy and pride can help you navigate those inevitable setbacks that come along the way. It reminds you that you're making progress, even if it's not always in giant leaps.
A Moment of Reflection
Take a moment to reflect on what you've achieved, no matter how small. It could be a completed task, a new skill learned, or simply overcoming a challenge. By celebrating these small wins, you create a positive feedback loop that fuels your motivation and keeps you moving forward on your path to success. So, don't forget to acknowledge your progress, because even the smallest victories contribute to the grand scheme of things.
Defining Your Own Success
Success isn't a one-size-fits-all concept. It's a journey that unfolds differently for each person. What matters most is aligning your goals and achievements with your values and beliefs. Embracing a growth mindset and celebrating small wins along the way can make the journey even more fulfilling.
Remember, success isn't just about reaching the finish line; it's about the journey itself. Above all, include God in your journey. Ask Him to reveal things before you to help your mission's alignment with Him. By embracing challenges, learning from setbacks, and staying true to your core values, you'll find your own definition of success and cultivate a life that is both meaningful and fulfilling.
  • Embrace the process and find joy in the journey, not just the destination.
  • Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem.
  • Stay true to your values and beliefs, even when faced with challenges.
  • Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage and inspire you.
  • Never stop learning and growing.
Praise God above all for the gifts you have been given.
Pray daily. Make it a part of your every day life. Your prayers should be genuine and in good faither - God is not our "personal butler".
God has a plan for us, but it's up to us to fulfill it.
